Evolution: An exception that proves the rule
A careful comparative analysis suggests a simple explanation for a category of exceptions to the general correlation between separate sexes in plants -- dioecy -- and self-incompatibility. In some genera, polyploidy causes failure of self-incompatibility, and dioecy may then evolve.
متن کاملSemaphorin 3E, an exception to the rule.
Class 3 semaphorins (Sema3s) regulate axon guidance, angiogenesis, tumor growth, and tumor metastasis. Neuropilins (NRPs; NRP1 and NRP2) are the cell surface receptors for the Sema3s. However, to signal, interaction of Sema3s and NRPs with plexins is obligatory. In this issue of the JCI, Casazza and colleagues report data that challenge the conventional wisdom about the role of Sema3s in tumor ...
متن کاملLinear low-dose extrapolation for noncancer health effects is the exception, not the rule
The nature of the exposure-response relationship has a profound influence on risk analyses. Several arguments have been proffered as to why all exposure-response relationships for both cancer and noncarcinogenic endpoints should be assumed to be linear at low doses. We focused on three arguments that have been put forth for noncarcinogens. First, the general "additivity-to-background" argument ...
متن کاملAcid-catalyzed nucleophilic additions to carbonyl groups: is the accepted mechanism the rule or an exception?
The transesterification reaction, and in particular the methanolysis of ethyl acetate with sulfuric acid as catalyst, is used as a model reaction to study the acid-catalyzed nucleophilic addition to a carbonyl group. Continuum solvation methods (SMD and IEF-PCM) and the MPWB1K functional are used. The reaction mechanism is studied in methanol and in acetonitrile as solvents. Our results indicat...
متن کاملPhonological dyslexia and phonological impairment: an exception to the rule?
The condition known as phonological dyslexia involves very poor reading of non-words, with otherwise good word reading performance [e.g. Derouesné & Beauvois, 1979; Sartori, G., Barry, C., & Job, R. (1984). Phonological dyslexia: A review. In R. N. Malatesha & H. A. Whitaker (Eds.), Dyslexia: A global issue. The Hague: Martinus Nijhoff Publishers]. Theoretical accounts of this non-word reading ...
